Faves: Places

Writer* Where #Amwriting This Week-Pj’s Coffee & Tea Co

Pj’s Coffee & Tea- Highland Park, NJ

In New Jersey this week visiting the parents. Good for food and a few laughs, but for work…not so much. Luckily NJ has a piece of New Orleans thanks to Pj’s Coffee & Tea in Highland Park.

The center of town has a great number of cute shops and eateries. Their suburban alleys are decorated with murals instead of urine target practice.

The coffee shop is well laid out with an area for single laptop use and an area for groups to over analyze stanzas. They have a great selection of sandwiches, mini pizzas and even quesadillas. The coffee and espresso isn’t that strong, but it is well made and inexpensive.

All in all a great place to get some writing done while in Central Jersey.

Photo Inspiration: Nigeria

I’ve been online all day researching Nigeria in preparation for my trip next year. Came across this wonderful picture slideshow page on TripAdvisor. It’s funny because their page on Nigeria presents a warning to Americans not to travel to the country. But for us brave souls ( who have pushy Nigerian mothers) who decide not to head their warning, we will be rewarded with an amazing experience. I’m so glad that these individuals documented their travels.  My favorite one is Slideshow of Owerri.

Below are a few lovely images from TripAdvisor’s gallery.

It’s Official. I’m Obsessed with Coffee Shops!

Image

I often work while passively watching a Law & Order series marathon. Any will do, from UK to Criminal Intent. Tonight it’s Criminal Intent; this particular episode titled “Pas de Deux” aired in 2004, a year before the actor playing the villain, Charlie Rocket committed suicide out on his farm in CT. Sorry I often go off on tangents—get used to it.

Anyways the initial crime scene in this episode is what caught my attention. It was a coffee shop! So bright and spacious and their display cases; oh my.  I had to find out where they were. Of course I went and completed a series of searches on Google (My own detective work.) And Voila! The scene was shot at Devon & Blakely. Not completely sure which one, since they have several midtown locations, but I will keep you updated. This case is not officially closed.

My Favorite Bookstores. In Memory of Mr. Whitman

The sole purpose of my trip to Paris this year was to go to Shakespeare and Company. My love of books began at a young age. In Nigeria we start to attend school at the age of three. I remember my first book, it was an English language manual filled with children’s stories.

When my family packed up and headed to the states, my parents attempted to leave my book collection, but I cried so hard that they allowed me to carry a separate little suitcase on the plane filled with my treasures.

When I moved out of my parents home in New Jersey, my father took on the task of sending me my book collection. “Chinonso you have over two hundred books!” He exclaimed in his accented English.

Okay so you get the point; I love books! I’m surprised that I’ve waited this long to become a writer.

Shakespeare and Company will always be my number one choice. But since I live in New York I had to find some local favorites.

1. Strand Book Store

Large selection of used books. They also have a great occult section.

2.Logos Bookstore

They have a cute little outdoor area in the back where you can sit and relax.

3.Housing Works Bookstore

I never feel too guilty buying a huge stack of paperbacks. It’s for charity!

4.McNally Jackson Books

I love this space.

5.Idlewild Books

Also hosts language classes.

RIP Mr. Whitman

Let’s Talk Euros

I know that Americans are more hesitant to go to Europe now because of the exchange rate but Athens was very inexpensive. The average check for an espresso, gyro and a coke was 8 euros! And alcohol was also reasonably priced. Below is a list of my favorite spots. Oh and all of these locations have free WI-fi so you can check in on four square. ; )

1. Jima’s Ginger

2.Mylos Cafe

3.Loras

4.Sutsu

5.Mishmash

Neighborhood Spotlight: Gazi-Athens, Greece

Last night my friend and I took the metro past Syntagma for once and discovered a whole new world. Take that Ariel. Gazi seems to be where it’s at here in Athens. We were wondering where everyone was after 10pm. As soon as you step out of the metro station the party begins. The bars are lined up one by on; you bar trip rather than hop to each one. Which we happily did.

We decided to return today to see if there is life before 7pm. And there is. There is also free wi-fi, the best Souvlaki (at Apolo) and frappes.

This should be your first stop when landing in Athens. You can check out Acropolis later. Those ruins aren’t going anywhere.
